Project Overview

Based in Portland, Alta Planning + Design (Alta)  has carved out a unique niche for itself in the field of active transportation. Their expertise lies in the planning, landscape architecture, engineering, and education/encouragement programs for non-motorized transportation. Their work brings about positive change by creating places that are geared to moving people rather than cars, connecting community members to daily needs, and empowering every person to lead an active, healthy life.

For a long time, Alta operated out of an antiquated building on the Eastside. The building, while rich in history, was not equipped to support the evolving nature of their work. Numerous individual rooms and spaces provided little opportunity for the kind of collaboration and shared presence that Alta’s work thrives on. Moreover, the building’s structure and layout did not allow for changes to align with their evolving work culture.

Recognizing the stark gap between their workspace and their work philosophy, Alta decided to seek out a new home that could better accommodate their ethos and operational needs. Their primary goals were to find a location that would foster enhanced collaboration, support their ambitious growth plans, and reflect their commitment to active and inclusive community spaces.

The result is an environment that serves as a testament to Alta’s mission of creating places where people want to be.

Lively planters create a visual separation between circulation and workstation areas.

We worked with Hyphn to design the office, following their advice to ‘earn the commute.’ So now more folks enjoy coming to the office more often, and everyone is feeling the palpable benefits of those in-person interactions, which will benefit our projects and our clients.
